Today was the Moor Park Junior Fun Run at Merchant Taylors’ School, and I was competing in the Under 10 Girls category, which was a 1.3km race. It was an all-girls race, and I had one clear goal in mind: to win and finish in first place. I was determined to prove myself and show everyone that I could not only win but do so convincingly.
As usual, my strategy was to get to the front as quickly as possible and then build on my lead throughout the race. I got off to a great start, gaining an instant lead within the first few moments. The lead came much easier than I had anticipated, and once I found myself in that position, I focused on extending it as much as possible. Winning was definitely my top priority, but I also had another goal—I wanted to achieve an impressive time. My brother’s friend had just won his race in the Under 12s category, so I felt even more motivated to prove that I could dominate my race just as decisively.
I kept my concentration and pushed myself hard the entire way. I knew I had a comfortable lead, but I wasn’t going to let up. I wanted to finish strong and with a time I could be proud of. By the time I crossed the finish line, I had clocked 5:30, with a pace of 3:59 per kilometre. I was really proud of my performance. I think I beat the second-place girl by at least 30 seconds, making it a comprehensive victory. What made it even sweeter was the fact that I’m only 8 years old, and I was racing against girls who were a whole year older than me. Knowing that made the win feel even more special.
This race was perfect preparation for my upcoming school House Cross Country, which I’m really eager to win. Today’s run gave me a huge confidence boost, and I’m feeling more ready than ever. After the race, I was thrilled to receive my trophy, and it felt fantastic to add it to my growing collection of running trophies. Every race and every win brings me closer to my goals, and this one was no different.
After my race, it was my brother’s turn to compete in the Under 10 Boys race, which was the same distance. He also ran brilliantly and won his race just as decisively. I was so happy for him, and it made the day even better knowing we both came away with victories.
Looking ahead to next year, I’m already excited to return and compete in the same race when I’ll be 9. My goal is to defend my title and win again, but I also want to improve on my time of 5:30. I know I can get faster, and I’m determined to keep pushing myself to be the best I can be. Winning today was amazing, but there’s always room to improve, and I can’t wait for my next challenge!
